Why We Don't Offer a "Pro" or Paid Tier

If you've spent any time online, you've seen the pattern. A tool starts out great and free. Then they introduce a "Pro" tier. Suddenly, the free version becomes artificially restricted, deliberately slower, or covered in hurdles to push you toward paying. We refuse to do that.

Our Stance

Every tool does the exact same thing for everyone.

Incentives

Why a Paid Tier Changes the Product

When you charge users directly, you create a legitimate expectation of value. People paying a monthly subscription rightly demand new features, updates, and more power. The problem is that adding "more power" directly conflicts with our core philosophy of restraint.

A paid tier would create immense pressure to add features that justify the price tag. We would find ourselves building capabilities we don't actually believe should exist—just to keep subscribers happy. The features worth paying for are almost always the ones we've deliberately chosen not to build, like bulk processing, historical data scraping, or automated tracking.

Transparency

The Reality of Being Ad-Supported

We are ad-supported. We don't hide this, and we acknowledge it comes with its own set of tradeoffs. Ads take up screen space, they can be distracting, and they introduce third-party scripts to the page. We work hard to ensure our ad partners respect privacy and don't overwhelm the interface, but we won't pretend they aren't a compromise.

However, this compromise allows us to keep the actual functionality of Instaustad pure. Because we don't need you to upgrade, we don't need to hold back features or make the free experience frustrating. Our incentive is simply to make a tool useful enough that you return when you need it.

The Future

What Happens if the Math Changes

People often ask what we'd do if advertising stopped covering our server and development costs. The honest answer is that we'd have to figure it out. We might look at voluntary donations, sponsorships, or finding cheaper ways to operate.

But what we wouldn't do is retroactively put our existing tools behind a paywall, or create a two-class system of users. We built Instaustad to be a level playing field. If the business model ever needs to change, the product's integrity won't be what we sacrifice.
