People occasionally ask about the name, so here's the actual thinking behind it, rather than making you guess.
Origin & Etymology
"Ustad" means a master craftsman or skilled teacher — someone genuinely good at a trade.
The word itself
"Ustad" is a real word, borrowed into English usage from Hindi, Urdu, and Persian, where it means something like a master craftsman or a skilled teacher — someone who's genuinely good at a specific trade, not just experienced at it. It's the kind of word used respectfully, for someone whose skill in a craft is worth learning from.
We liked that meaning specifically because it's the opposite of what a lot of "Instagram tool" sites project. It's not about hacks, shortcuts, or gaming a system. It's about being genuinely good at one narrow, specific task — in our case, working with public Instagram captions and profile information cleanly and respectfully.
Why not something that sounds more "official"
A lot of tools in this space pick names designed to sound like they might be an Instagram product — something with "Insta" bolted onto a generic tech-sounding word, deliberately vague about who's actually behind it. We didn't want that. Blending "Insta" with a word that has real meaning, rather than a meaningless string of letters, felt more honest: it tells you something true about what we're aiming for, instead of trying to borrow credibility that isn't ours.
What we were trying to avoid
We also avoided anything that could be mistaken for an official Meta or Instagram product name, since that kind of confusion is exactly what we don't want. The independence disclaimer on nearly every page of this site exists for the same reason the name doesn't try to sound official in the first place — we'd rather be clearly, unmistakably ourselves.
A name is a small thing, but it sets a tone
We don't think a name alone proves anything about how a site actually behaves — plenty of well-named tools are badly built, and plenty of oddly-named ones are excellent. But choosing a word that means "someone skilled at their craft," rather than something that sounds impressive but means nothing, felt like the right starting point for a site built around doing one narrow thing carefully.
Commitment to the Craft
Doing one narrow job cleanly, accurately, and respectfully without hype or artificial pretenses.
